Tomtate

Hector managed to catch this fish from the boat, fishing on the bottom with a weighted line. The local fisherman often catch these in their cast nets on shore.

These fish are part of the grunt family. The more prominent mid-line stripe that crosses the eye, and black spot on tail, are typical colouration. Their maximum size is about 10 inches; ours was a little shorter than this. They are common on shallow reefs and group in large shoals. It is difficult to find specific information about this species on the internet- based on the diet of other species of grunt, we can assume it eats shrimp, as well as annelids, bivalves, and crustaceans, and that it is preyed upon by larger piscivorous fish.
